Peace Crimes: Spooky silence around Pine Gap

I acknowledge Mr Stephens and Mr Wallace, and all Arrernte elders of the past and future. I thank you for the privilege of meeting here in magnificent Arrernte country.

I acknowledge that this country was never ceded by Arrernte people – not the town and the hill we stand on today, nor the land where Pine Gap base has been built.

Kieran Finnane’s book Peace Crimes is an enormous achievement. A spooky silence often prevails around Pine Gap. Kieran’s book stands in contradiction to that silence. She takes the intellectual and political position that the functioning of the military facility at Pine Gap, and agreements between Australian and US governments, should be out in the open.

She has analysed swathes of technical information about the Base’s role in facilitating high-tech warfare. She confronts the part it plays in lethal, illegal drone strikes against citizens of countries with whom Australia is not at war, and the human consequences of this lawlessness.

She explores the motivations and methods of the Peace Pilgrims – what led to their actions at Pine Gap, and to their trial for trespass, under the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act. With care and clarity she unpacks the trial. We see how the law is applied in this instance of what she wryly calls ‘a reckless act of prayer’.

She does this without preaching, or shying away from difficult material. Her approach is connected, clear, inclusive, and above all, compassionate. Her extraordinary commitment to writing this book stands to benefit us all, by amplifying the pilgrims’ message and carrying it further.

This is a book on a mission. It invites you to engage with the stories of the pilgrim’s lives and actions. You find you want to know: ‘Who are these people? What do they have to say to me? Seeing how they live, how might I live my life?’

How does this book do so much, weave all these strands together? The book’s content, the way it is organised, and its purpose are skilfully braided. Strands of experience, analysis, and reflection are woven together into a new, more complete story about violence, and lives dedicated to peaceful resistance to violence.

Here are some of the strands:

  • The multicoloured threads of the pilgrims’ lives, their faith and principles, their activist predecessors, their music, imagery and language, their grief, courage and determination
  • The philosophy and practice of non-violent direct action
  • Kieran’s own family and community ties, her deep reflections.
  • The continuum of destruction of Aboriginal lives, livelihoods, language and culture from Frontier Wars through to today.
  • The wars in which Pine Gap has played a part, from Vietnam onwards.

Readers will find many different places to land – many points of connection relating to their own stories. For me the book prompted memories of the environmental actions of the 1980’s: Terania Creek; Franklin Dam; the Daintree road. Also of the womens’ collectives helping women prepare for NVDA at Roxby Downs, the Women for Survival Peace Camp at Pine Gap in 1983, Lucas Heights, Cockburn Sound, Jabiluka, Anzac Day protests and other actions.

The pilgrims’ stories reminded me how with NVDA, activists choose to be exposed to harm, to be vulnerable, to experience in their own bodies the power of the small and ordinary, the power of standing together, of care and nurture, and the power to refuse violence.

In a Women for Survival newsletter from 1983 I found these favourite lines from Judy Grahn:

‘the common woman is as common as the best of bread and will rise’.

Words echoed by Peace Pilgrim Margaret Pestorius as she insists she does

‘all those ordinary things that ordinary people do’ – ‘putting my ordinary little body on the line’.

‘… being a non-violent activist is about disruption, stopping harms, facing up, witnessing, speaking truth to power’.

This book will have done its work when ordinary people who read it find their own ways to take action on the issues that move them most, whether that means anti-racism work, climate action, protecting country, strengthening culture and community, working for food and water security, standing for office, making music, lamenting our losses, or creating images or texts that, like this one, acclaim life and inspire change.

Pine Gap: A tiny crack, but enough to let some light in

Peace Crimes by Kieran Finnane tells the story of activism at the secret US spy base near Alice Springs. Six Peace Pilgrims trespassed on the grounds of Pine Gap in 2016, leading to a court case in 2017 where the activists were charged under terrorism laws and faced up to 7 years jail. Their quest was to save lives by stopping the function of Pine Gap for even a day, and to expose the horrors of Pine Gap’s role in illegal US wars, characterised by drone strikes and killing of civilians.

Pine Gap: A tiny crack, but enough to let some light in

…because War Crimes Matter

Members of the #ToxicSAS have been issued with ‘formal notices’: they will have to defend acts defined as ‘war crimes’ against poor people in Afghanistan. See article below.

This is the same militarisation, born of #foreverwar, that has poured into US culture. It is now being enacted by a #militarisedpolice in response to the largely nonviolent #BLM movement. White supremacy and colonisation are at its roots.

We acknowledge and remember that this militarised supremacy first rolled out in Australia aimed at Aboriginal people with a sustained wave of violence.

Even though the #ToxicSAS get massive media coverage, we suggest there are several elements missing from public discussion that a keen peacenik’s eye will want to point out. It is up to us to force these issues into visibility with voice and action.

Save this Image: Save this image and the one below to your phone AND to your computer and use it regularly when you comment on this issue. Share it when the issue hits the news. Comment on new articles.

Your Voice: Promote veterans voices: Remind people that veterans have demanded the exposure of these war crimes. They have different reasons. But they have taken risks and are front-line affected. For example, their peers continue to suicide. Truth and facing up is an important element in psychological healing. They were used by the corrupt States of USA and Australia: Trained as killers. Now training the Indonesian police and spreading the US bastardry.

Your Voice: Call for the release of the Brereton Report: Even Andrew Hastie, the WA member of parliament, an ex-soldier, has requested for the Brereton Report to be released and be transparent.

But it is not clear yet that we will see it. This is the Defence Minister’s responsibility and Raytheon’s person on the inside @LindaReynoldsWA is highly problematic. Contact her and politely berate her.

Your Voice: Ensure trials are heard in the open: We are witnessing more and more secret trials. It turns out that even our own activist trials at Pine Gap were practice for this sort of excessive secrecy. War Crimes trials must be heard in the open so we can understand the dynamics of militarised, industrialised abuse.

Your Voice: Use the hashtag #NameSoldierC: The Soldier involved in killing the unarmed Afghan man in the wheat-field, as revealed earlier this year on Four Corners, should be named. Other alleged murderers in our society are named before trial. Please, use this hashtag. Follow @Wagepeaceau on twitter. There are still not enough of you on twitter!

Your Voice: Make Governor General David Hurley visible and central – and his band of Top-Brass – throughout any trials. Wage Peace urges you to OFTEN remind people that “Governor General” General David Hurley was Chief of Defence when these murders occurred. Like Kerr before him he did the work of the US. Ask why the ‘investigation’ Hurley oversaw, came up with nothing despite the helmet-cam recording and the credible report by a witness.

  • Hurley oversaw the war crimes.
  • Hurley’s ‘investigations’ of war crimes led to nothing until he left the post. Activists experienced the violence directly at Swan Island – that’s when the violence was revealed at the parliamentary Senate estimates.
  • Hurley must have lied about the state of the war to the Australian people and to the parliament, in line with the lies of his US counterparts
  • Hurley allowed the soldiers to keep returning to the US Security Forces where they were positioned as killers for the US army, for which they were glorified as reward.
  • Hurley himself was rewarded with career moves: First Governor of NSW and then to the role as so called “Head of State”.

Like Archbishop Hollingsworth before them, men in positions of power overseeing abuse must be removed from roles of prominence. If you called for the fall of the patriarchs of the Catholic Church, you should also be calling for the fall of the patriarchs of the Australian Defence Force.

These men used the wars to promote themselves into positions of further abuse: Gen. Peter Leahy for example is on the board of a significant arms dealer. Gen. Mike Hindmarsh operates in the Middle East facilitating arms deals through his position as as Senior Officer in the UAE Presidential Guard [security forces].

Link the #ToxicSAS to US militarism and colonisation:  Because #BlackLivesMatter.  We know that dangerous policing has its roots in militarised culture. #Afghanistan and  #Iraq matter. #WarCrimesmatter.

AUSTRALIAN special forces soldiers have been served with formal notices accusing them of committing war crimes while fighting in Afghanistan.

The extraordinary development comes four years after investigations began into rumours that special forces operators were involved in unlawful killings and cruelty while in Afghanistan.

In recent days, a number of soldiers have received notices from the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, NSW Court of Appeal Judge Justice Paul Brereton.

Most are former soldiers although some are understood to be current members of the ADF.

The notices advise the soldiers he intends to make adverse findings against them, and gives them a period in which to justify or explain their actions.

Those adverse findings include breaches of the Law of Armed Conflict and other misconduct allegations.

The soldiers have several weeks to respond, then Justice Brereton’s final report will go to the Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, along with a series of recommendations.

This could include criminal prosecutions. Current members can be recommended for discharge from the army.

The report is due to be handed down in July and will ultimately go to the government.

“Further dissemination of the report or material within it will be a matter for the Chief of the Defence Force,” an IGADF spokesman said.

The Department of Defence has had to develop contingency plans to deal with the mental health fallout from such a finding against previously revered soldiers.

President of the Australian Commando Association and the RSL Greg Melick said the inquiry was not yet complete.

“The mere fact the notices have been served doesn’t imply guilt and it is inappropriate to speculate until the process is complete,’’ he said.

“The speculation has been very damaging to the health and welfare of not only many veterans but their families.’’ In a separate but parallel inquiry, the Australian Federal Police continue to investigate two allegations of war crimes allegedly involving two special forces soldiers.

One is known only as Soldier C, while the second is Australia’s most decorated war hero, Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith.

With regards to Soldier C, the AFP said: “The Australian Federal Police received a complaint from the Minister for Defence regarding footage aired on the ABC, concerning the actions of ADF members and the death of a man in Afghanistan.

“The AFP has commenced an investigation and will not comment further while it remains ongoing.” Mr Roberts-Smith strongly denies wrongdoing and is suing Nine for allegations it published against him. The case continues this week. Mr Roberts-Smith’s lawyer Mark O’Brien was asked to confirm whether his client had received an adverse finding notice, and if so whether he would like to comment on it. He said: “I have no comment on any part of that question.’’

Cancel the Weapons Trade during Covid and on…

Wage Peace has created this set of slides to share with friends and family. We think many people would be disgusted to know about the massive spending on military technologies for both export, and domestic projects. These projects are #NotDefence, but #Crapitalism.

[envira-gallery id=”2226″]

Please share this ‘zine’: Cancel the Weapons Trade!

Full Steam Ahead for Weapons Industries Under the Cover of Covid

Not all of you follow Wage Peace on Facebook so we’ve put together a summary of important developments since the fires.

  1. We see the continued roll out of “defence” industry plans and the announcement of $4bn worth of early payments for contracts.
  2. Military industry gained itself a cell at the South Australia Covid Taskforce; And a ‘working group’ in the Federal Covid Taskforce.
  3. Austal, ship builders in Western Australia gained an order of 6 Navy patrol boats as a “stimulus”. Defence Industry godfather, WA Governor Kim Beazley and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds are both from Western Australia. Reynolds has recently said she is “spruiker-in-chief” for the so called ‘defence’ industries.
  4. The US military arrival in Darwin postponed for just 8 weeks: arriving at the start of June.
  5. There was a tenuous ceasefire in Yemen. Predictably a huge surge in covid-related deaths has now followed there. The Saudi-US bombing of infrastructure (a war crime) had already resulted in a starving population and now a failed health care system. Australian companies such as EOS have been targeting Saudi Arabia to buy weapons exports. Australian Anti Bases encourages you to contact Marise Payne’s office (02) 9687 8755 foreign.minister@dfat.gov.au and ask them to cancel the licences issued to nations which continue human rights violations: Saudi Arabia, Indonesia.
  6. Three weapons trade events were postponed. Land2020 (Brisbane) and Avalon (Melbourne) and the Indo Pacific Maritime Expo (Sydney) will all be reset a year later than usual. Friends of the Earth published this essay calling for the cancellation.

Exposing the Corporations

Wage Peace has been mapping what is going on with developments in the weapons industries in Australia. Wage Peace, with others, are closely monitoring militarism growth in Australia. Together we are building a picture of what is going on and making it visible.

What actions can you take to expose the influence of the military corporations in your location?

You can make a big difference by talking about the weapons trade and sharing the links on this page.

Revolving Doors: At Michael West Publishers there is interest in our “defence” money and the people responsible for giving it away. Michelle Fahy is writing and researching with Callum Foote, gaining significant reach with their reflections about who is moving through the ‘defence’ #RevolvingDoors. Use the hashtag! The picture is grim: new projects, new contracts, billions of tax payers money facilitated by parliamentarians who appear to work directly for the weapons trade.

#StopKillerRobots The Australian Campaign to Stop #KillerRobots is producing a report on the development of autonomous weaponised robots in Australian universities. The ABC introduced this issue last year.

It’s clear that ethics in universities are scant in the face of dollars from the weapons corporations. Australia has failed to rule out developing these weapons.

“The removal of a ‘human in the loop’ makes a weapon that independently selects and engages targets unable to comply with International Human Rights Legislation. Therefore, the development and deployment of fully autonomous weapons are unlawful.”

#DisarmUnis Wage Peace is recording information about the activities of the weapons corporations in the universities on LittleSis. Maps like this can help us trace the interface between universities and the weapons industries. The relationships are all in plain sight, if we look. This is an open source project so feel free to add information.

University of Sydney political connections

Training: There’s a 6am 3rd June – Little Sis Workshop on Power Mapping and divestment if you are really keen. It focuses on fossil fuels but it’s the same deal. Men and women linked by education and industry, constructing systems.

Wage Peace Weapons Industry Database: Our researchers have been compiling a database of what the big companies are doing to inform activists.

PROJECTS: Here’s a view of our database showing SOME of the projects with contracts more than $1bn

CORPORATIONS: Here’s a view of the Corporations and SOME of what they are involved in

Parliamentarians are paid by the corporations, not by the voters, so we don’t think targeting government for change is helpful. For example, the Labor Party is responsible for promotion of the King Pin: Kim Beazley who is now Governor of Western Australia. He is still doling out projects.

We are looking for a volunteer to join our research team and follow up on the States.

We invite you to contact us. Tell us which ‘target’ project or corporation will inspire movement building. Lethality, human rights, the manipulation created by the US alliance, cost, corruption: all are possible points of outrage.

BOEING’S CONTRACTS Boeing has billions of dollars worth of contracts in Australia. Your tax dollars at work.

BOEING’s FLASHY PROJECTS Boeing has just worked with Australians to produce an Australian designed and built drone – the “Wingman”. It doesn’t fly yet but it looks good and everyone is pleased that though Australia doesn’t produce a car or a phone, it produces a semi autonomous flying drone that flies alongside Jet Fighters. It will have the capacity to fire missiles (bombs). Because it is designed to fly as an offsider to the F35 or another jet, it’s called a “Wingman”.

BOEING’S BIGGEST PROJECT Boeing’s biggest contract approaching $1bn is for BattleSpace Communications Systems which are arrangements for distinct communications: radio, antennas, data transfer. (Can’t rely on the NBN in a time of difficulty.)

BOEING AND BRENDAN NELSON Dr Brendan Nelson, recently stepped through the revolving doors landing as President of Boeing Australia. Brendan Nelson was previously Defence Minister and director of the Australian War Memorial. Nelson has been rewarded for delivering two Boeing windfalls over the last 15 years: We have to ask: Was he working for them all the time?

1/ Extensive advertising delivered for the War Memorial.

2/ $6.6bn jet fighter contract given to Boeing against the advice of Defence in 2007. Here’s an excellent podcast by 7AM – Schwartz Media.

BOEING and THE WAR MEMORIAL You can contact David Stephens from Honest History to contribute your name for a “Public Works Committee” submission against the half a billion dollar redevelopment of the War Memorial to include more weapons advertising.

BOEING SELLS TO DUTERTE: In the last week Human Rights Watch have raised an alarm that US Boeing are selling their Apache Attack helicopters to the Duterte government in the Philippines. Duterte has been involved in severe human rights violations. The Apache was the helicopter that delivered Raytheon’s ‘Hellfire’ missiles in the famous WikiLeaks Collateral Murder Video. Attack helicopters have one main purpose: to kill people.
